ABSTRACT

PURPOSE

Relational conflict is a persistent challenge affecting the performance of construction supply chains. Hence, this study investigates the dynamics of relational conflict from the perspective of construction professionals in South Africa.

DESIGN / METHODOLOGY / APPROACH

Using a quantitative research design, data were collected from 150 randomly selected respondents through a structured questionnaire. Data was analysed using the mean item score (MIS), standard deviation (SD), and the exploratory factor analysis.

FINDINGS

The exploratory factor analysis revealed five clusters of relational conflict: adverse weather conditions, poor construction design, budget overruns, inadequate communication among stakeholders, and slow response time. These factors negatively impacted collaboration, decision-making, and overall project delivery. The findings underscore the importance of improving communication, planning, and responsiveness across the construction supply chain.

VALUE

The study contributes to knowledge by providing empirical insight into conflict dynamics specific to the South African construction supply chain. It offers recommendations for practice, policy, and further research to mitigate conflict and enhance project outcomes.
