ABSTRACT

PURPOSE

This paper aims to explore the opportunities and barriers that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the construction industry face in adopting digital technologies, through a systematic review of recent academic literature.

DESIGN / METHODOLOGY

A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted using the Bibliometric PRISMA framework. Relevant studies published between 2015 and 2025 were sourced from databases including ScienceDirect, Scopus and Web of Science. Thematic analysis was applied to identify recurring patterns related to digital transformation within construction SMEs. Inclusion and eclxusion cretiria as well as other detaiks are indluded in the methodology section of the paper.

FINDINGS

The review highlights that while digital transformation offers benefits such as increased efficiency, cost savings, and enhanced collaboration, SMEs encounter significant barriers. These include financial constraints, skills shortages, cultural resistance to innovation, and poor infrastructure. Few studies address SME-specific digital readiness frameworks or contextual solutions in developing economies.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS

This study is limited to peer-reviewed academic sources and may not capture grey literature or emerging industry practices.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

The findings inform policymakers, industry bodies, and academic institutions about the need for targeted support mechanisms, skills development programmes, and inclusive digital policies for construction SMEs.

ORIGINAL / VALUE

This paper contributes to the discourse on digital equity in construction by synthesising fragmented knowledge and identifying gaps for future research.
