ABSTRACT

PURPOSE

This paper examines the application of digital technologies to enhance contractual claims management in the South African construction sector. It seeks to identify the challenges that negate effective claims management and assess the potential of digital technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Blockchain, in mitigating these challenges.

DESIGN / METHODOLOGY / APPROACH

A scoping review method was utilised for this paper, entailing an extensive examination of existing literature and practice associated with adopting digital technology in managing contractual claims. A scoping review was chosen for knowledge synthesis from applicable literature to identify existing challenges and opportunities offered by digital technologies within the construction sector. Literature was extracted from Google Scholar, Taylor & Francis, ResearchGate, Science Direct, and Emerald.

FINDINGS

The analysis suggests that the use of digital technologies in contractual claim management has the potential to realise quicker, more accurate, and more transparent processes. Digital technologies can alleviate typical problems arising from communication failures and inefficient data management systems, which are likely to impact project timelines and budgets.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS / IMPLICATIONS

The research is constrained by the quantity and range of available literature, especially empirical research applicable to the South African construction sector. The results should thus be regarded as indicative instead of exhaustive, pointing to opportunities for additional empirical research as well as practical pilot initiatives.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

Digital technologies integration in contractual claims management and offers practical guidance for maximizing efficiency, reducing disputes, and improving project results. The research will also serve as a basis for other studies on the subject.

WHAT IS THE ORIGINAL / VALUE

This paper proposes the use of Blockchain and AI to enhance contractual claims management in the construction sector. The study adds valuable information to the body of knowledge by concentrating on these emerging technologies and their ability to transform traditional methods.
