ABSTRACT
PURPOSE
This study examined the perception of tenants and property managers regarding installation of solar power systems in shopping centres in Botswana using Airport Junction Mall as a case study. It aimed to establish the perceptions of tenants and property managers on the benefits and challenges of adopting solar energy in commercial properties.
DESIGN / METHODOLOGY / APPROACH
To meet the objectives of this study, a quantitative research methodology was adopted. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to property managers and anchor tenants at Airport Junction Mall. Property managers were selected due to their direct oversight of mall operations and sustainability initiatives.
FINDINGS
The findings indicated a strong consensus on the benefits of solar power systems, particularly its financial, environmental, and operational advantages. The study highlighted that photovoltaic systems adoption in shopping centres was well-supported by tenants and managers.
RESEARCH LIMITATIONS / IMPLICATIONS
The major limitation of this paper is that it was based on a single case study and was only limited to the views of tenants and property managers hence the generalisability of the findings is limited. Therefore, future studies should use the multiple case study approach.
PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS
The paper has made policy recommendation which if implemented can increase the adoption of solar power in Botswana.
WHAT IS THE ORIGINAL / VALUE
The paper is the first to report on the perceptions of the benefits of solar power by tenants and property managers in shopping centres in Botswana.
