Open Innovation Adoption in the South African Timber Construction Sector

ABSTRACT
PURPOSE
The construction industry faces challenges related to its negative environmental impact and the need for more sustainable construction materials. This study explores open innovation as a model for increasing the adoption of timber construction.
DESIGN / METHODOLOGY / APPROACH
A qualitative approach was employed, combining a literature review with expert interviews. Seventeen studies were analysed, along with the responses of eight industry experts on the benefits/enablers and disadvantages/barriers of open innovation in timber construction.
FINDINGS
Open innovation can accelerate innovation in the timber construction sector by facilitating resource sharing, reducing costs, aligning industry strategy, and promoting stakeholder collaboration. Key drivers include the need to address industry-wide challenges, shared risks and opportunities, and access to funding that supports collaborative research and development. However, several barriers were noted, including mistrust and stakeholder opportunism, reluctance to share knowledge within the industry, and communication difficulties due to misaligned goals.
RESEARCH LIMITATIONS / IMPLICATIONS
The findings of this study are based on a limited number of expert interviews and studies. Future research should expand the sample size and explore case studies of successful open innovation initiatives.

Implementing open innovation can enhance competitiveness and sustainability in timber construction.
